Egypt issued this pound in 2010 to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Egyptian state television broadcasting, which launched on July 21, 1960 — timed deliberately to coincide with the eighth anniversary of the 1952 revolution that deposed King Farouk. State television was from its first broadcast an instrument of Nasser's pan-Arab project, and the choice to commemorate it in silver six decades later reflects how foundational that institution remains to Egyptian national identity.
