| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse is executed in dark brown intaglio on cream paper, with the left margin occupied by a vertical strip of three vignettes: an equestrian figure within a circular medallion at top, the Bank of Scotland coat of arms with saltire and motto in the centre, and a circular armorial medallion at foot, all framed by intricate guilloche borders. To the right, a central vignette presents two allegorical figures flanking the Bank's saltire shield, above the bold letterpress legend BANK OF SCOTLAND and the promise-to-pay text; the denomination ONE POUND appears in the upper corners and in manuscript figures at lower left. The note carries a printed date EDINBURGH with handwritten day and year, manuscript serial number, and two manuscript signatures above the printed designations Acct. and Teller, with the foundational legend CONSTITUTED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT 1695 at the foot. |

Bank of Scotland's £1 notes of this period were issued under the Scottish system of note issuance that predates the Bank of England's monopoly ambitions — Scottish banks retained their right to issue their own banknotes, a privilege that survived repeated Westminster attempts to curtail it throughout the nineteenth century. Perkins Bacon, still operating from their Lombard Street premises at this point, brought to the job the same steel-engraving expertise they had applied to postage stamp production since the 1840s.
The cotton substrate used in this series is notably thinner than what the bank had specified in earlier decades, a change that makes surviving examples prone to fold splits at intersections.
