St. Mary's Parochial Bank was one of a handful of small Irish parochial institutions that issued their own notes during the mid-nineteenth century, operating at the margins of a banking system still consolidating after the Famine. These were intensely local instruments — issued against parish-level trust rather than substantial capital reserves — and their survival rate is correspondingly poor.
