Bradbury Wilkinson's New Malden facility printed for dozens of sovereign governments during this period, but domestic Scottish commercial banknotes were comparatively unglamorous work — high volume, tight tolerances, and an issuing bank with a very precise house style developed over decades. The Royal Bank's £1 notes of this transitional period fall at an interesting administrative moment: decimalisation was already legislated (Decimal Currency Act, 1967), and the Bank was actively preparing new designs for the February 1971 changeover. These pound notes were thus produced with a known expiry date built into the planning cycle.
Scottish banknotes have never been legal tender in England, a distinction that catches people out still.
