The denomination ONE POUND is stated in large letterpress text at centre, flanked on either side by the numeral ONE within ornamental panels, with a guilloche border framing the entire note. An extensive list of branch offices is printed in small type across the lower centre field, with the promise-to-pay inscription and date — 1st August 1918 — rendered in copperplate script above. |

The Provincial Bank of Ireland was chartered in 1825 specifically to serve areas outside Dublin — a direct response to the Bank of Ireland's effective monopoly on the capital. By 1918, the bank operated an unusually wide branch network for a commercial issuer, which meant its notes circulated across provincial towns where no competing paper currency was readily available.
The 1918 date places this note squarely within wartime economic disruption, when hoarding of coin was widespread across Ireland and small-denomination paper carried genuine daily-commerce weight. Provincial Bank notes of this period are frequently found with heavy use for exactly that reason.
