The Primitive Methodist Connexion in Jersey operated its own informal credit arrangements during the 1860s and 1870s, and trust-issued notes of this kind reflect a practice that was more common in the Channel Islands than on the British mainland — private ecclesiastical or community bodies occasionally issuing paper obligations in lieu of coin when small-denomination currency was scarce or inconvenient. Jersey's ambiguous constitutional position outside the UK banking regulatory framework permitted instruments that would have been legally problematic in England.
Whether these circulated beyond the immediate Methodist community or functioned purely as internal accounting instruments remains unclear from surviving records.
