Egypt's 2019 bimetallic pound series was issued as part of a broader commemorative program tied to major national infrastructure projects promoted under the Sisi government's development agenda. The Power Stations coin specifically references Egypt's investment in large-scale electricity generation during a period when the country faced chronic power shortages — rolling blackouts had plagued urban and rural areas alike through the early 2010s. Agreements with Siemens signed in 2015 for three combined-cycle plants at Beni Suef, Burullus, and New Capital represented the largest single power plant order in the company's history at that time.
