Plymouth Dock Bank was a provincial English bank operating in what is now Devonport — the town was still formally called Plymouth Dock until 1824, which places this note in the last years of that name. English country banks of this period issued their own notes freely under the co-partnership system, with no requirement for Bank of England backing, a situation Parliament ended with the Bank Charter Act of 1826 following a cascade of country bank failures in 1825. Plymouth Dock Bank survived that crisis, but the broader suppression of small-denomination private note issue effectively ended the era this note belongs to.
The embossed stamp is the sole security feature — ink-based counterfeiting was rampant in Regency-era England, and embossing was considered marginally harder to fake without the original die.
