Cyprus issued this proof specifically for the 1992 Barcelona Games, the first Olympics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union — an event that sent a wave of newly independent nations scrambling to field teams under flags that had not existed four years earlier. Cyprus itself had participated in the Summer Games since Munich 1972, though without a medal of any kind through this period.
