Egypt's October War — known in the West as the Yom Kippur War — began on 6 October 1973 when Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and breached the Bar-Lev Line, a defensive fortification the Israelis had considered impenetrable. The initial crossing remains a significant military achievement in Egyptian national memory, and the thirtieth anniversary in 2003 prompted a wave of state commemoratives of which this gold pound is one.
The .875 fineness places it in the older 21-karat tradition long preferred for Egyptian gold coinage, distinguishing it from the .900 standard common to European issues of the same period.
