The Northern Banking Company Limited was one of a handful of Irish provincial banks still issuing their own notes well into the 1920s, a situation that survived the partition of Ireland in 1921 largely through inertia — no immediate legislation forced consolidation or withdrawal of existing private issues in Northern Ireland. The company itself had roots going back to 1809 in Belfast, and by the time this series was in circulation, it was already operating in the shadow of impending absorption.

Northern Banking was acquired by Midland Bank in 1929, and private note-issuing rights under the new Northern Irish framework were increasingly constrained through the decade. This particular issue sits squarely in that transitional window.
