The North of Scotland & Town & County Bank was itself the product of a 1908 merger between the North of Scotland Bank and the Town and County Bank, creating one of the smaller Scottish chartered banks still operating independently before the consolidation wave of the 1950s and 60s. Scottish banks retained their note-issuing privilege under a framework dating back to before the Bank Charter Act of 1844, which explicitly excluded Scotland from its restrictions — a carve-out that survives in modified form to this day.
Bradbury Wilkinson printed extensively for colonial and provincial issuers throughout this period. The 1918 date places production squarely in wartime, when paper quality and ink supply chains were both under pressure.
