Additional information

Issued to commemorate the 1998 launch of Nilesat 101, Egypt's first domestically operated communications satellite — itself the first satellite launched by an Arab nation for direct broadcast purposes. The project was a deliberate push by the Egyptian government to control its own broadcast infrastructure rather than lease capacity on European birds, a politically charged decision in the context of pan-Arab media competition.
