The National Bank of Scotland was absorbed into the Royal Bank of Scotland group in 1969, but in the late 1920s it remained an independent Edinburgh-based institution with full note-issuing authority under Scots banking law. Waterlow & Sons handled the printing from their London works — a common arrangement for Scottish banks, whose own offices had no press facilities.
The P#256 series spans six years, which suggests periodic reissue rather than a single print run, though surviving examples rarely carry dates precise enough to distinguish early from late printings within the series.
