The denomination '١ جـ' (1 Pound) appears within the central motif. A cartouche below contains the legend 'جمهورية مصر العربية' (Arab Republic of Egypt) in Arabic naskh script. The dual date '١٤٠٩-١٩٨٨' (AH 1409 / AD 1988) is inscribed in the lower field. A commemorative Arabic legend arching around the upper periphery records Naguib Mahfouz's receipt of the Nobel Prize in Literature, all within a decorative denticled border.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued the year after Mahfouz received the Nobel Prize in Literature — the first Arab writer to do so — this coin was struck as a direct commemorative response to that award. The Central Bank moved quickly; the Nobel announcement came in October 1987, and this piece followed within the next calendar year.

The .875 fineness places it in the traditional 21-karat standard long favored by Egyptian gold coinage, consistent with domestic jewelry conventions rather than international bullion norms.
