Obverse description The obverse features an elaborate Kufic calligraphic composition occupying the upper and central field, rendering the legend 'Arab Republic of Egypt' in interlaced decorative script. The denomination numeral '1' appears centrally, flanked by the dual dates 1409 (Hijri) to the right and 1989 (Gregorian) to the left in the lower field. Below the central inscription, the word 'جنيه' (Pound) is inscribed in flowing Naskh script. The entire design is framed by a decorative segmented border running along the inner rim.
