The Currency Commission's "Ploughman" series, of which this is a part, was an unusual arrangement: eight participating commercial banks — including Hibernian — each had their name printed on otherwise near-identical notes, all issued under the Commission's authority following the Currency Act of 1927. The Hibernian Bank itself dated to 1825 and was one of the few Catholic-founded banks in Ireland, a distinction that carried real social weight in the early decades of the Free State.
The series was eventually withdrawn in favour of the consolidated "Lady Lavery" notes, with Hibernian Bank later absorbed into Bank of Ireland in 1958. The Brennan & Hodges signature combination covers only two known dates.
