Guernsey Bank — formally Macculoch, Maire, Bonamy & Co. — was one of the earliest private banking ventures on the island, operating in an environment where sterling coin was chronically scarce and small denomination paper filled the gap left by the Royal Mint. The Channel Islands were not subject to the Bank of England's monopoly on note issue in England, which gave local merchants the legal room to circulate their own paper.
Notes from this house dating to 1808 are among the earliest documented Guernsey private bank issues and survival rates are extremely low. The partnership dissolved within a few decades, and unredeemed notes were never systematically collected or archived.
