The Shetland Islands have no formal monetary authority — these pounds are issued by the Shetland Arts and Crafts Association as a local trade token, accepted by participating businesses within the islands but carrying no legal tender status under UK law. The Greater Spotted Eagle is a rare vagrant to Shetland, where serious twitchers descend on the archipelago each autumn hoping to intercept migrating raptors blown off course from Scandinavia and eastern Europe.
