Ain Shams University was established in 1950 as Egypt's third university, carved out of what had been the Ibrahim Pasha University complex in the Abbassia district of Cairo. Its founding was part of a deliberate postwar expansion of higher education access under the Wafd-influenced government, intended to relieve pressure on the overcrowded Cairo and Alexandria institutions. The 1999 commemorative marks fifty years from that founding.
The .720 fineness is characteristic of Egyptian commemorative pounds from this period — a deliberate step below sterling, reflecting the Central Bank's cost management on issues aimed more at institutional gifting than collector markets.
