Syria's participation in the FAO coinage program of the late 1960s was part of a coordinated UN Food and Agriculture Organization initiative that persuaded dozens of developing nations to issue coins carrying agricultural themes as a form of soft-power messaging around food security. The Syrian pound was under significant pressure during this period following the economic disruptions of the 1967 Six-Day War and the shift toward Ba'athist command economics under the post-coup government.
KM#99 is a single-year issue, struck only in 1968.
