The "Gothic Crown" name references the 1847 crown issued under William Wyon — one of the most admired British coin designs of the 19th century, struck as a proof-only issue and never intended for general circulation. The East India Company, reconstituted as a bullion and collectibles issuer after its 2019 commercial revival, has leaned heavily on that Victorian prestige for this series.
The EIC dissolved by Act of Parliament in 1874. That the name now appears on modern silver issues is a licensing arrangement, not a continuity of the original trading monopoly.
