Jersey's pound coinage sits outside the UK monetary system entirely — the island issues its own currency under the authority of the States of Jersey, not the Crown or the Bank of England. The 1992 proof issue coincided with a period when Jersey's financial sector was expanding rapidly, making the island increasingly conscious of projecting an image of institutional solidity through its official coinage.
