Additional information

Piedfort versions of the circulating pound series were introduced by the Royal Mint in 1982 primarily as collector pieces, struck at twice the thickness of standard issues on specially prepared planchets. The Scottish thistle reverse was the second in the four-nation rotation — England in 1983, Scotland in 1984, Wales in 1985, Northern Ireland in 1986 — a sequence that established the template still loosely followed in the £1 series decades later.

Mintage for the 1984 silver piedfort was 10,000 pieces.
