Additional information

Rowett Island sits in the South Sandwich Islands, a remote volcanic chain so rarely visited that the British Antarctic Territory itself has no permanent civilian population. The island was named after John Quiller Rowett, the sugar merchant who funded Ernest Shackleton's final expedition — the Quest voyage of 1921–22 — during which Shackleton died at South Georgia before the ship ever reached Antarctic waters.
