The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, founded in 1824, operates entirely on voluntary donations — it receives no government funding. This coin is part of Alderney's ongoing commemorative program honoring the organization, with the Roy Barker I being an Atlantic 85 class inshore lifeboat that served the RNLI's operational fleet. The Atlantic 85 class entered service in 2005, replacing the earlier Atlantic 75, with improved speed and self-righting capability.
