Alderney, a Crown dependency outside the UK proper, issues commemorative coinage through the authority of the Royal Mint under license — its pieces carry face value but circulate as collectibles, not currency. The island's particular attachment to Remembrance is not merely ceremonial: German forces occupied Alderney from 1940 to 1945, and its civilian population was entirely evacuated beforehand, making it the only British territory to be both occupied and depopulated during the war. Several forced labor camps, including one classified as a concentration camp, operated on the island during that period.
