Gibraltar has produced an unusual number of naturalist and archaeological issues tied to the territory's own prehistory — the Forbes' Quarry skull, found in Gibraltar in 1848, was actually the first adult Neanderthal specimen ever discovered, predating the Neandertal valley find by eight years, though it went unrecognized as such for decades. This coin commemorates that connection. The "Type 2" designation distinguishes it from the earlier issue by a modification to the effigy of Elizabeth II, transitioning to the fourth Rank-Broadley portrait introduced across British dependent territories in the early 2000s.
