Low Island is a small uninhabited landmass in the South Shetlands, named by early 19th-century sealers who logged it as a navigational hazard rather than a destination. The British Antarctic Territory, established by Order in Council in 1962, issues coins primarily as a revenue instrument — no circulating economy exists on the territory itself, and the issues are philatelic and numismatic products by design.
Copper-nickel was an unusual choice for a 2021 commemorative in this series, which has leaned heavily toward silver and gold strikes aimed at collectors.
