The Kon-Tiki expedition of 1947 saw Thor Heyerdahl and five companions cross approximately 6,900 kilometers of the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft, departing from Callao, Peru, and making landfall at Raroia atoll in French Polynesia after 101 days. Heyerdahl's intent was to demonstrate that pre-Columbian South Americans could have settled Polynesia — a theory that modern DNA evidence has since complicated without fully dismissing.
This issue was struck by Pobjoy Mint for the Isle of Man, which has long licensed its currency authority for commemorative programs with no direct connection to the subject matter.
