| Obverse description | Conjoined right-facing effigies of Queen Elizabeth II in two superimposed portraits: the mature effigy wearing the George IV State Diadem with drop earring and pearl necklace, overlapping a younger, smaller effigy of the Queen with a laurel wreath in her hair. The surrounding legend reads 'SOUTH GEORGIA & SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS' with the date '2012' at lower right. |

The Kon-Tiki expedition of 1947 saw Thor Heyerdahl and five companions cross approximately 6,900 kilometers of the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft, departing from Callao, Peru, and making landfall at Raroia atoll in French Polynesia after 101 days. Heyerdahl's intent was to demonstrate that pre-Columbian South Americans could have settled Polynesia — a theory that modern DNA evidence has since complicated without fully dismissing.
