Gibbs Island sits at the northwestern tip of the South Shetland Islands and sees virtually no human presence beyond occasional scientific passage. The British Antarctic Territory itself was formally established by Order in Council in 1962, though Britain's claim to the sector dates to 1908 — one of the oldest active territorial claims on the continent. Coins issued for BAT circulate in name only; the effective currency in use at research stations is whatever the visiting nation's personnel bring with them.
