| Descrizione del rovescio | Central field dominated by the elaborately detailed heraldic achievement of the Borough of Douglas, featuring a quartered shield surmounted by a crown and surrounded by ornate acanthus scrollwork mantling. The upper quarters of the shield display a set of scales and a raven respectively, while the lower quarters bear a lion passant and the three legs of Man triskelion. A scroll bearing the borough motto appears below the shield. The legend 'ISLE OF MAN' arcs around the upper periphery, 'DOUGLAS' appears immediately above the shield, and 'ONE POUND' arcs around the lower periphery, all separated by raised dot stops. |

The piedfort format — double-thickness blanks struck from proof dies — was revived in Britain and its dependencies during the early 1980s largely at the initiative of the Royal Mint, which recognized a collector market willing to pay a premium for coins that would never circulate. The Isle of Man, issuing through Pobjoy Mint, was among the most aggressive adopters of the format.
The Machin effigy used here dates to Arnold Machin's 1964 portrait commission, the same sculpt that became ubiquitous on British postage stamps from 1967 onward.
