| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central design features a large first-generation brick-style mobile cellular telephone rendered in high relief, depicted upright and facing forward with an extended antenna, a keypad of alphanumeric buttons, and speaker grille details. The telephone is encircled by an orbital band or globe motif, flanked to the left by a satellite dish and to the right by an orbiting communications satellite, together evoking the theme of modern telecommunications. The Manx inscription ELLAN VANNIN arcs along the upper periphery in a distinctive stylised script, while ONE POUND appears along the lower periphery in matching lettering. The design was executed by Norman Sillman and is struck to proof standard against a mirror-polished field. |

The Isle of Man's Treasury has long used its autonomous coining rights aggressively, issuing commemorative and novelty pieces well outside the scope of mainstream British numismatics. This "Cell Phone" pound belongs to a run of annual issues tied to Manx technology themes — a deliberate effort to attract thematic collectors during the late 1980s boom in commemorative silver. The series was struck at Pobjoy Mint in Surrey, which held the Isle of Man contract throughout this period.
The five-year date span reflects annual restrike availability rather than continuous new production.
