The 1984 Isle of Man piedfort program was part of a broader push by the Manx Treasury to capture the collector market during a period when pieforts — double-thickness blanks struck in precious metals — were gaining traction among Commonwealth mints. Castletown served as the island's capital until 1869, when Douglas took over administratively, a shift driven largely by population growth around the harbor trade.
The piedfort format at twice the standard planchet thickness accounts for the weight doubling over the circulating type. KM#P9 sees limited secondary market appearances.
