| Reverse description | Three historic RAF aircraft depicted in dynamic flight formation across the central field: a Spitfire in the upper register, a twin-engine aircraft in the middle, and a larger bomber in the lower foreground. The RAF Benevolent Fund circular crest appears to the left of the composition. The legend 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination ONE POUND positioned along the lower portion of the field. The overall design is rendered in high relief on a proof-quality mirrored field. |

The Royal Air Force's 80th anniversary in 1998 fell at an awkward commemorative moment — the RAF had marked its 75th with considerable fanfare, and the centenary was still two decades off. Guernsey's issue belongs to a dense cluster of Channel Islands silver pounds from the 1990s produced primarily for the collector market, with little pretense of circulation.
KM#84 shares its specification with several concurrent Guernsey commemoratives of the period, a cost-conscious approach to die and planchet production that the island's authorities used repeatedly throughout the decade.
