| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Diamond Diadem Crown, with pearl drop earrings and a necklace visible, rendered in fine relief after the portrait by Joel Iskowitz. A beaded inner border encircles the field, with the date 2020 positioned in the exergue. The legend ELIZABETH II · ONE POUND · ALDERNEY C.I. arcs around the periphery, and the engraver's initials JI appear on the truncation. |

VE-Day on 8 May 1945 carried specific weight for the Channel Islands: they were the only British territory under German occupation during the war, and liberation came a day later, on 9 May — a date still observed separately in Guernsey, Jersey, and Alderney. The 75th anniversary commemorations planned for 2020 were largely dismantled by COVID-19 restrictions, making this issue a record of ceremonies that never took place.
The .375 fineness — 9-carat gold — is standard for Royal Mint-affiliated commemorative issues at this weight and price point, keeping collector entry costs low without straying into base metal territory.
