Reverse description A naturalistic flax plant (Linum usitatissimum), the heraldic emblem of Northern Ireland, rises prominently from the centre of the field, its slender branching stems bearing five-petalled blossoms and buds in finely detailed relief. The plant springs from a bed of roots at the base, with the Royal Crown depicted beneath the main stem, symbolising the union of the province with the Crown. The denomination ONE POUND is inscribed in bold raised lettering along the lower arc, and the entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
