The Egyptian Cooperation Society, founded in 1908, was one of the earliest formal cooperative credit institutions in the Arab world, established to extend rural lending networks at a time when Egyptian agricultural debt was effectively controlled by foreign creditors following the British occupation. This commemorative was issued on the society's centennial.
Egypt's .720 silver commemoratives from this period were struck in modest quantities for collector distribution rather than circulation, largely through the Central Bank's philatelic and numismatic sales program.
