Dumbell's Banking Company was the dominant private bank on the Isle of Man for much of the nineteenth century, and this note dates from the period when it was still operating with apparent stability. The collapse came later — in 1900, the bank failed catastrophically, wiping out thousands of depositors and triggering what remains one of the most painful financial disasters in Manx history. Notes from this earlier issue predate that ruin by over two decades.
Perkins, Bacon & Petch were masters of security printing, particularly known for their siderographic transfer process, which allowed fine engine-turned work to be reproduced with exceptional consistency. Their involvement here was typical for serious provincial and colonial banking clients who wanted forgery resistance they couldn't source locally.
