Dumbell's Banking Company — formally the Douglas & Isle of Man Bank — collapsed in February 1900 in one of the most spectacular private bank failures in British Isles history, wiping out thousands of depositors and triggering a parliamentary inquiry into Manx banking regulation. Notes from the 1874 series therefore carry a grim retrospective weight: the same Dumbell family signatures here would still be appearing on paper well into the 1890s, right up to the crash.
W. & A. K. Johnston were primarily known as cartographic printers, which makes their appearance on Manx private banknote work a minor curiosity.
