Issued in the final year before Cyprus locked its exchange rate to the euro in preparation for EU accession, this pound represents the tail end of an independent monetary policy the island had maintained since 1963. The butterfly series was part of a broader push by the Central Bank to issue collector-oriented circulating commemoratives during the transition period.
Cyprus formally adopted the euro on 1 January 2008, rendering all pound-denominated coinage obsolete within a defined exchange window.
