The Shekel of Tyre was the coin required by Jewish law for the annual Temple tax in first-century Jerusalem — a detail that made it simultaneously sacred and controversial, since Roman-era Judeans had to specifically seek out this Phoenician currency for religious purposes while Roman coinage was considered ritually unacceptable for Temple tribute.
