Alderney sat at the epicenter of D-Day's naval staging — more Channel Island than ceremonial bystander — yet spent the entire occupation under German control, its civilian population evacuated in 1940 and not returned until 1945. That the island now issues commemoratives for the operation that began its liberation carries a specific irony the Royal Mint's equivalent pieces lack entirely.
