Obverse description Printed in blue and red over a fine guilloche underprint, the obverse carries the Royal Arms vignette at upper centre flanked by serial numbers on either side, with a classical seated female figure in a circular vignette at lower left and ornate rosette medallions at the corners. The bank title and promise-to-pay legend are set in bold letterpress across the centre, with the place of issue (Edinburgh) and date printed below the serial numbers. A facsimile signature of the General Manager appears at lower right.

Reverse description Printed entirely in blue-grey, the reverse is dominated by a central intaglio vignette of a classical female figure seated beside a sailing ship, enclosed within a circular frame bearing the motto DITAT. The composition is surrounded by an elaborate guilloche border with floral medallion corner ornaments and repeated numeral 1 devices throughout. The printer's imprint appears in the bottom margin.
