Obverse description The bank's heraldic arms — a shield supported by a lion and a seahorse with the motto 'PRO TANTO QUID RETRIBUAMUS' — occupy a central vignette at the top, flanked by provincial arms in the upper corners. The note is framed by an elaborate intaglio border with ornamental corner pieces incorporating harp and sunburst motifs, with denomination numerals 'ONE' in solid panels at lower left and right. A large blue guilloche underprint fills the central field, overlaid with the promise-to-pay text in italic script and the bold letterpress inscription 'ONE POUND', with the date and a manuscript signature appearing in the lower portion.
