The oval is surrounded by elaborate acanthus-scroll ornamentation, with large £1 cyphers in guilloche panels to the left and right. The issuer's name and branch arc across the top of the oval surround, and the Head Office address is lettered in a curved cartouche at the foot. |

Barclays Bank Limited operated a private note-issuing operation in Zimbabwe — then Southern Rhodesia — under licence, a holdover from the era before central banking infrastructure existed in the territory. These notes circulated alongside Southern Rhodesia's official government issues for decades, making Barclays one of the last commercial banks in British Africa still legally authorised to issue its own currency.
Waterlow & Sons had an extensive colonial printing relationship, producing notes for dozens of British-administered territories. The long issue window — 1924 through 1960 — means significant variation exists across the series in signatures and control numbers, though it is catalogued under a single Pick reference.
