| Reverse description | Printed in dark brown intaglio on an uncoloured ground, the reverse is dominated by a central oval vignette of a full-rigged sailing ship under sail, enclosed within a beaded border and flanked by elaborate acanthus scrollwork and Scottish thistle plants. The Bank of Scotland saltire emblem appears at the top centre, with the motto on twin scrolls. Circular denomination counters bearing the £1 cypher are positioned at lower left and right within the decorative border. |

W. & A.K. Johnston merged with G.W. Bacon in 1954, making this series one of the first to carry the combined firm's imprint — the timing aligns almost exactly with the earliest dates in this issue. The three signature combinations across the run reflect successive appointments to the office of Governor: Elphinstone gave way to Craig in mid-1955, then Bilsland from late 1957, while the Treasurer's signature remained Watson throughout.
The relatively compressed date ranges for Elphinstone & Watson make that pairing the scarcest of the three.
