The Bank of New Zealand was incorporated by act of the New Zealand General Assembly in 1861 and operated as a private trading bank — not a central institution — during the period this note circulated. Commercial banks in New Zealand retained the right to issue their own notes until 1934, when the Reserve Bank of New Zealand was established and that privilege was extinguished. This note predates that change by half a century.
Bradbury Wilkinson, by the 1880s, held printing contracts across the British colonial banking world. Their work for BNZ in this decade was engraved intaglio, which accounts for the tactile quality that distinguishes genuine examples from later forgeries documented in the Auckland press during the 1880s.
