The Bank of New South Wales was Australia's oldest bank, established in 1817, and continued issuing its own notes long after the Commonwealth Bank gained its monopoly mandate — a mandate that took years to enforce in practice. Private bank notes remained legal tender in Australia until 1910, but the Bank of New South Wales was permitted to continue issuing notes under legacy provisions tied to existing contractual obligations, a peculiarity of Australian monetary transition that few other countries replicated so messily.
Charles Skipper & East handled the printing in London, as they did for numerous colonial and dominion institutions. The plates were engraved to a high commercial standard, and the series shows no significant documented varieties.
